Technical Excellence Alone Doesn't Hold a Team Together

“Take care of the people, the products, and the profits — in that order.” Ben Horowitz’s line from The Hard Thing About Hard Things sums up something I relearned firsthand recently.
During an unplanned team transition — vacation, an absent manager, multiple profiles to manage at once — it became clear, again, that technical depth alone doesn’t hold an operation together. You need someone who can orchestrate people, adapt communication, and keep the team’s trust even in uncertain moments.
That doesn’t diminish the technical side — if anything, it reinforces the value of pairing technical depth with relational maturity. That combination is what carries someone from specialist developer to TechLead, and from TechLead to Tech Manager.
