Get Involved with Mozilla - PAPI Unit

Another talk at UNIT’s PAPI (freshman pedagogical support and integration program) for the Computing courses. The first time it was a Maker Party, PAPI Unit; this time I decided to get them directly involved with Mozilla, aiming to bring new members into the community by showing how they could contribute and join in. The talk itself had originally been put together by fellow Mozillians Melissa and Panaggio, and I just adapted it for this session.

Once again I noticed that, even with fewer students, they’re increasingly interested. Whenever I talk to freshmen, I bring up topics I wish someone had told me about when I started college. The chance to begin your degree and discover a free software community is amazing — organizing events, exchanging knowledge with people in the field, contributing with development, design, time, and more. For 2015, the plan was to start app development groups, with monthly meetups and talks from upcoming contributors.

To my surprise, out of the few talks and mini-courses I’ve given, this was the one where the audience seemed most engaged — even on a Friday night starting at 8pm. Nobody dozed off or left early; quite the opposite, people still wanted to keep chatting at 10pm. Big promises for the course and the IT market that year.
